The year was 2020.
Pandemic, isolation, depression - the works.
A friend gave me this book, The Alchemist, stating that she knew I needed to read it. The Book is written by Paulo Coelho. I had heard of it, of course. But, my word, how right was she?
At the surface, it is a simple narrative of a shepherd boy named Santiago who embarks on his dream journey, seeking treasure in the pyramids of Egypt. He has these dreams that are spiritual in nature, and on the way, he encounters mentors, guides, lessons on life and love. All-in-all, The Alchemist is a book near and dear to my heart as it awakened a long-dormant sense of wonder and aspiration within me. It might just do the same for you.
And so, I read the book and instantly loved it. The first thought to pop into my head was, “I have to give this to my dad to read.” So I did. His first response - LET’S WRITE A SONG ABOUT THIS BOOK! And so we did.
“Maktub” or “it is written” is a song written and performed by Mahatma and Jenerali Ulimwengu. The care we put into crafting the melody and message of it all hopefully shines through and brightens your day.
Nearly two years later, we often find ourselves referring back to the book. I thought I might share our melody with you lovely people. I trust you will find some peace in it.
